In Memory to Sam Neely

CAPTION: Who Wrote and Recorded The Tribute Song that Ran at the Closing of the Final Episode of M*A*S*H?
Singer/Songwriter Sam Neely wrote and recorded The Party’s Over which was a tribute to and ran at the closing of the final episode of M*A*S*H. “Encore Sam-This Party is for You” One of Sam Neely’s last requests was to have “One Last Encore” Tribute Concert Honoring Sam Neely. The distinctive voice of “Texas Legend” Sam Neely, a significant country songwriter and entertainer was called to serve with the “Legends of Angles Choir” leaving only the sweet memories of his melodies that some of us were fortunate to have heard in person including fans across the world and the family he left behind. His legacy will continue with the legions of friends and fans around the world that will insure ‘Sam Neely’s Legend’ will forever remain among those of the true legends in the music industry.
# What: Tribute to songwriter/singer Sam Neely’s honor, benefiting Wenholz House Corpus Christi, TX.
# When: 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 29th, 2006 # Where: Executive Surf Club, 309 N. Water St. Corpus Christi, TX.
# Cost: $25 per ticket # Performing Musicians: Rocky Benton; So. TX. Blues Legend, BushBullit, Crossover, Texas Crossroads, Dicky Neely, Remix, Howard McLaughlin, Mike Gregory, and MORE #Special Guest Include; Jason Neely* (Sam Neely’s son), and Mayor Henry Garrett –Corpus Christi, TX.
There has been an outpouring of musicians wanting to participate at this event and are being added to the open mic session starting at 9:30 to 11:00 p.m.

Sam Neely's fight was never with the law like his top 40 song,” I Fought the Law". Sam had fought a lifelong battle with diabetes and a heart condition. His ongoing medical conditions finally won his battle in life, but placed him in the ‘Top 10 Wanted in Heaven’ when he was called upon to perform in the ‘Lords Band’ on July 19, 2006.
We have suffered the loss of a truly unique and great man in the country music industry, of the like we will never again see in our lifetime. Through it all, Sam was not only one of the country music most gifted singers/songwriters, he was a friend to all through his words and within the sound of his voice and he continued throughout life to encourage and help his family and his friends through their endeavors in life.

Please join us in this tribute to honor Sam and welcome a very special guest star Jason Neely, “Sam’s Son and his Pride and Joy”. Jason Neely stood steadfast by his father’s side; firmly committed to the legacy his father was sure to leave him. Jason knew he had one big challenge ahead of him as it would be hard to fill his father’s shoes. Jason will be stepping out of his father’s shadows to perform his own unique sounds on the same musical platform as his father. Jason’s resemblance to his father is startling and you do not expect to hear the sounds of the balzy, meaty, juicy guitar licks emanating and radiating from his guitar. Unleashed, Jason is soon to be a musician to be reckoned with as a legend in his own right and earning his own star on the music walk of fame.

Singer/songwriter Sam Neely was a very talented performer. Born in Cuero, Texas on August 22, 1948, Sam Neely said he fell in love with the guitar at age 10. Sam’s family later moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where by age 15 Neely was playing guitar in bands at local dances. Around 1966 he joined a local band called Buckle, and gained his first recording experience with that group. At age 19 Sam, while watching the "Merv Griffin" TV show, he saw a movie producer ask for song submissions for a soundtrack he was working on. Sam submitted some material, and that was the start of his professional music career.
With the help of a Hollywood movie producer, Sam soon signed with Capitol Records and found immediate success with his top 20 pop hit "Lovin' You Just Crossed My Mind" That song and Sam's two Capitol LPs that followed "Rosalie and Gentle People" and "Sanctuary”, set off a whirlwind of activity that brought him to perform at the Palomino, Bitter End, and Troubador, to TV appearances on "American Bandstand," "NBC's Midnight Special," and "Nashville Now". other shows, and to sharing the concert stage with such acts as Juice Newton, the Guess Who, and such emerging country acts as Con Hunley, Janie Fricke, and John Conlee. Neely's follow-up Capitol single, "Rosalie," went top 40, an A & M single, "You Can Have Her," went top 20, and a later release, "I Fought the Law," went top 40. He has had 13 songs on Billboard's top 40 charts, including his song "Sail Away" recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys, which became a number one national hit. Sam's song for the Lady Lex helped to bring the USS Lexington to Corpus Christi, TX.
His movies include: "Tin Can" and "Tilt" with Brooke Shields, and his song "Long Road to Texas" was used in that movie. Along the way Sam placed songs in two movie soundtracks, "Bonnie's Kids”, which featured his song "Blue Time”. Additionally Sam wrote and recorded The Party’s Over which was a tribute to and ran at the closing of the final episode of M*A*S*H.
